Customer Story: Gamcorp – Positioned for growth and operating at full strength remotely

Rapid growth meant structural engineering company Gamcorp was searching for a modern phone system that could scale easily, allow them to work remotely and affordable for a growing business.

Rapid growth meant structural engineering company Gamcorp needed a business phone system that grew with them, made them available to customers and was cloud based for business continuity in any circumstances. With a cloud-based directory, call forwarding and a sophisticated voice mail, Spoke Phone seemed the right choice.

Hard to teach an old phone new tricks 

It was a  tale of growth and needing a phone system that can match for Victorian-based, structural engineering company Gamcorp.

Starting in late 2009 with three employees, Gamcorp has grown to be a team of 20, with most of that growth happening in the last five years. This meant their existing office-based phone system could no longer meet their needs, so Managing Director, Martin Gamble went in search of a modern phone system that could scale easily and didn’t cost the earth.

Before Spoke Phone, Gamcorp had used the same phone system from when the business was first started. 

“It was a traditional small PBX system with two incoming lines for calls and one for faxes. The system only allowed up to eight headsets, so we bought a second hand one that allowed up to 24,” says Martin.

“When we got to the point where we had 12 or 13 people in the office though there were just too many times where all three lines were used. We had no idea if people were trying to get through to us and we would have to wait for a free line before making phone calls.”

This outdated system meant important client calls could be missed meaning lost time and money for the company. Martin realised that to simply put more lines onto the existing PBX would be an expensive option, so he went searching for a new solution that would help create a modern workplace.

Into the Cloud

Martin had already started moving the company’s accounting software and CRM into the cloud and figured this could be the way to go with a phone system as well. He came across Spoke Phone by accident when Googling phone systems. What immediately stood out was the fact it was mobile-first and built as an entirely new product.

“Before Spoke Phone, clients couldn’t always ring the person they were after for a specific project – they would ring reception and perhaps be patched through if the person they wanted was free. Now each team member has their own extension number and the level of professionalism we can show as a result from that is wonderful,” says Martin.

The call availability feature has been highly utilized in Gamcorp too. This shows when people are able to take calls based on the colour of the dot next to their name. 

“It just makes it so much easier for our office manager as she can forward calls on and know they will be answered,” adds Martin. 

“It’s also easy to transfer to voicemail or patch someone in to have a quick conference call – those are things we’ve never had before. Plus we like the fact that when we call someone from mobile it looks like we’re calling from the office – again it speaks to that trust and professionalism.”

The impact of Covid-19 on his company phone system didn’t go unnoticed by clients either.

‘When the coronavirus hit and everyone had to work from home there was nothing we had to change. Some of our clients who are in very large companies really battled with that. Our transition from office working to remote working was really simple for us and our clients were impressed.”

More enhancements means more opportunity

Martin adds that even though they’re a small business, to have a phone system with the features you could only get if you’d paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, is priceless.
